Le Mans Supermarkets

How to Survive the Le Mans Supermarket Run

The supermarket run is part of Le Mans. Everyone does it… and everyone gets it wrong at least once.

Do it properly, and you’re sorted for the weekend. Get it wrong, and you’ll waste hours in queues wondering why you didn’t plan it better.

More information on shops and shopping on this page.

Quick summary: Set up camp first, avoid peak times, go with a list, and get the essentials early.

Step 1: Set Up Camp First

Don’t go straight to the supermarket when you arrive.

Get into your campsite, set up your pitch, then go shopping. It’s much easier when you’re settled and know what you actually need.

Step 2: Avoid Peak Times

The worst times are:

  • Thursday afternoon
  • Friday afternoon

Best times:

  • Early morning
  • Late evening

Timing alone can save you an hour or more.

Step 3: Choose the Right Supermarket

The closest supermarket isn’t always the best.

Stores right next to the circuit get hammered. Slightly further out is often:

  • Quieter
  • Better stocked
  • Less stressful

Step 4: Go In With a Plan

Have a list before you go in.

Wandering around during race week crowds is slow and frustrating.

Know what you want, get it, and get out.

Step 5: Prioritise Essentials

Get the basics first:

  • Water
  • Beer
  • Easy food
  • Ice !

If shelves are empty later, at least you’ve covered the important stuff.

Step 6: Expect Queues (and Stay Patient)

There will be queues. That’s just how it is.

Stay calm, be polite, and treat it as part of the Le Mans experience.

Everyone else is in the same situation.

Final Thought

Learn a few French phrases, it will help!

The supermarket run isn’t something to rush.

Do it once, do it properly, and you won’t need to think about it again all weekend.

Ice, Ice Baby! If you want to keep your beer cool at the campsite you will need a good supply of ICE.
The supermarkets sell it as cubes or large blocks. They will run out! When they do they may sell bags of ice from their fish counter ice maker, its smaller cubes and can smell of fish, but will work for cooling, just don't add to your drinks!
