Getting around the circuit

The Circuit de la Sarthe is huge — over 8.5 miles (13.6 km) — and getting around it properly can make or break your race week.

There isn’t one “best” way to move around. The smart approach is to use a mix of walking, bikes, and transport depending on where you are and where you want to go.

This guide keeps it simple.

Quick summary: Walk locally, bike if you can, use road trains in the centre, and shuttle buses for Mulsanne and Arnage.

Step 1: Walking (Perfect for the Central Areas)

If you’re staying on the main campsites near the village — Houx, Maison Blanche, Tertre Rouge (when available), or similar — walking is absolutely fine.

  • Easy access to the Village, pits and grandstands
  • Good for exploring different viewing points nearby
  • No waiting around for transport

But…

  • Mulsanne Corner is far
  • Arnage is even further
  • It’s not realistic to walk the full circuit during the race.

Think of walking as your “local movement” option — not your full circuit solution.

Step 2: Cycling (The Best Upgrade You Can Bring)

Bringing a bike is one of the smartest things you can do — especially if you’re staying further out.

It comes into its own on campsites like Beauséjour where distances are much bigger.

  • Faster than walking, especially at busy times
  • Great for getting between viewing spots
  • Ideal for early morning or late-night movement

On Friday, when the track is open, you can also ride the full circuit — a proper Le Mans experience.

Simple rule: if you’ve got the space to bring a bike, bring one.

Step 3: Road Trains (Easy Central Transport)

The road trains operate around the central part of the circuit and are a relaxed way to get between key areas.

  • Good for moving between the Village, grandstands and nearby zones
  • Useful if you don’t want to walk or cycle
  • Not designed for the outer circuit (Mulsanne / Arnage)

They’re not the fastest option — but they’re easy, reliable, and good if you want a break from walking.

Step 4: Shuttle Buses (The Key to the Full Circuit)

If you want to explore properly, this is what you’ll use.

The shuttle buses run around the entire circuit and connect the main entrance with:

  • Mulsanne Corner
  • Arnage Corner
  • Other outer viewing areas

This is how you do those classic Le Mans moments:

  • Sunrise at Mulsanne
  • Night racing at Arnage
  • Exploring beyond the main straight

They can get busy — especially at peak times — but they are absolutely worth using.

Tip: Buses get very busy at peak times (especially after the start and before sunrise). If you can, go slightly earlier or later to avoid queues.

Step 5: Combine Everything (This Is the Trick)

If you stay in one place all weekend, you’re missing half of Le Mans.

The best way to get around Le Mans isn’t choosing one method — it’s combining them.

  • Walk for local exploring
  • Cycle for flexibility and speed
  • Use road trains for easy central movement
  • Use shuttle buses for the full circuit experience

Do this right, and the whole place opens up.

Final Thought

Le Mans is too big to stay in one place all weekend.

Move around. Try different corners. See the race from different angles.

That’s when it really clicks.
