We think that the PCGB campsite definitely passes the
"Ronseal test" - it does what it says on the tin. Without even reading this
review, you can well imagine the fastidious needs of people who will camp here
and their slightly obsessive attention to organisational detail. Perhaps we
smirk, but if this is the sort of experience you want, this will not disappoint
you.
- Pros: High standards of organisation, you will
be amongst like minded individuals
- Cons: Possibly lacks the wild atmosphere and
fun camping of some other campsites
- Typical camper: Clue -
expect
the engine to be in the back, or at least the middle of your car.
Here is a 2007 update from
our own team, who were stuck outside the perimeter of the site for an
hour or two on Saturday afternoon this year, whilst the traffic sorted
itself out.
Location &
Access: Average. The traffic at the entrance can become
very difficult owning to the approach to the one way road arrangement
that comes into force near the site during the race. Quite why the
Police sent the west bound traffic through a field is beyond us.
Camping:
If you have just a car and tent this is perfect. Expect to be allocated
a very defined space of smaller than average size - after all you are
here to watch a motor race or be out and about discussing gear ratios
and oil seal failures.
Security:
Very good. Porsche owners rightly like to sleep at night knowing that
their pride and joy is safe from marauding pikeys. The location of the
site also gives it a secure feeling.
Facilities:
Whilst we haven't used this site, the organisation here looks very good,
especially if you like being organised that is. Expect to be
participating in a fixed programme of social events.
Atmosphere:
Average. Its not party central, but that's the point of staying here.
This is a safe and secure world that's close to the trackside action.
Expect people who have very official job titles in the car club to send
you lots of emails telling you when to get up and when to go to bed, and
what to wear!
We feel that if you want everything organised and you
drive a Porsche, its going to suit you down to the ground - our rating
would be 4 stars. However, if you desire a less structured environment
and want to build your own base for the week, the rating is 3 stars.
Either way, if you are happy with the costs, its an
interesting and safe way to do Le Mans, especially if its your first
trip.

The business - worth working hard
to get
A fine campsite, have no worries at all
staying here
No major problems, but if you have a choice, this is
not the top drawer of sites
Not a disaster, but unless your needs are very specific,
this probably wasn't your first choice
See if you can trade for something better, but at least
you have somewhere to camp, right?
